Matt Laird began playing the violin at age 6 and from the start was encouraged to explore all the orchestral instruments. He attended UNC Greensboro for classical violin and music education where he developed his skills across violin, viola, cello, and upright bass. Laird performs all of the string instruments himself. With extensive study of arrangement and studio techniques of the masters, Matt's unique process allows artists to add full string section arrangements to their studio projects.
These recordings span across many genres, but Laird specializes working with producers/singer-songwriters in the pop, folk, hip-hop, and R&B styles. Recordings from his professional home studio will often feature up to 70 individual layers of himself playing violin, viola, cello, and upright bass creating a full string section sound molded to fit each unique track. No MIDI ever involved! Gear used includes high quality large diaphragm and ribbon microphones, analog outboard preamps, EQ, and compression, and minimal digital processing.
